Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular with automakers in recent years. Hyundai Motor Group itself plans to introduce 23 electric vehicles worldwide by 2025 under the Hyundai, Ioniq and Kia nameplates. However, like any emerging technology, electric vehicles are often misunderstood. Let’s take a look at some myths and frequently asked question to help you decide if electric is right for you.

Which Hyundai models are electric?

Hyundai currently has 2 fully electric vehicles available in Canada with a third arriving at the end of 2021. If you're familiar with Hyundai, you've probably heard of the widely popular Hyundai Kona Electric. Our EV version of the Kona CUV, it has a range of approximately 415 kms per charge, seasts 5 with cargo storage, and comes equipped with all the features you've come to love from Hyundai.

The Hyundai Ioniq is our current electric sedan option. Equipped with a smaller battery then our Kona Electric, it has a range of 274 kms on a single charge. It’s the ideal electric vehicle option for your practical everyday driving range. Like a standard sedan, it seats 5, has ample trunk space and comes with features like rear-view camera, heated seats, touch-screen display and more.

Coming at the end of 2021 is our much anticipated Ioniq 5 – our first all-electric SUV with a predicted range of 470-480km on a single charge.

MYTH: Electric Vehicles are too expensive

Our available electric vehicles start at $44,499 and with the addition of government rebates, it makes the expense not much more than a standard gasoline model. The purchase of our Hyundai Kona Electric or Ioniq models are eligible for government rebates of $5000 (with tax). Upon purchase, the rebate is applied as a discount on your bill of sale and there is no work to be done on your part. Our Sales team will fill out all the necessary paperwork on your behalf.

MYTH: EV Batteries only last a few years

Your smart phone battery might only last a few years, but you’re charging it every day, sometimes more. The average driver only charges their car a few times a month.

EV batteries are now designed to charge smarter, as well – when charged, they only replenish the depleted cells, which distributes the load across the thousands of cells that make up a battery pack.

Our standard Hyundai EV battery warranty is valid for up to 160,000 km, compare that to our standard warranty of 100,000 km on gasoline engine vehicles you can see we’re sure your EV will still be going strong for years to come.

MYTH: There isn’t enough chargers in our rural area

You’d be surprised to find that there are more chargers around than you think. Huron County currently has 27 EV chargers with 2 more coming soon*.

If you’re worried about running out of juice before finding a charger, there are handy apps you can download that will locate the nearest charger.
In the case of the Hyundai Kona Electric, if you have an Ultimate model, the Navigation system will alert you to the nearest charging station.

Can I charge my Hyundai EV at a Tesla station?

Tesla models have a different plug than most other electric brands, so no, you cannot simply plug your Hyundai EV into a Tesla charger. However, there are adapters available that will enable you to use a Tesla charger. Many Tesla stations will quite often have a standard Level 2 charger available as well.
